Frequently Asked Questions

How do I connect Hex MIDI to my computer or DAW?

On Android and iOS, plug in a USB-C or Lightning to USB-MIDI cable, or connect wirelessly via Bluetooth MIDI. In your DAW (such as Ableton Live, Logic Pro, or Reaper), enable Hex MIDI as an active MIDI track input. All notes, velocity, and MPE pitch bends are sent directly to your DAW instruments.

What is an isomorphic keyboard layout?

On a traditional piano, the physical distance between intervals changes depending on which key you start on (e.g. C major uses only white keys, while F# major uses mostly black keys). On an isomorphic keyboard (such as Wicki-Hayden or Janko), the geometric distance between intervals is invariant. Once you learn a chord shape, you can transpose it to any root note by moving the exact same hand shape.

Where are my recorded MIDI takes and presets saved?

Hex MIDI stores your recordings, custom presets, and loaded soundfonts 100% locally on your device storage (inside the Documents/Hex MIDI/ directory on iOS and Android). No performance data is ever sent to external cloud servers.

How do I import Scala (.scl) microtonal tuning files?

Hex MIDI Pro users can import Scala (.scl) and keyboard mapping (.kbm) files directly from device storage or file pickers. The Tuning Engine will automatically compute exact acoustic frequencies, assign diatonic degrees, and update the keyboard colors.
